  * The Long Island SS Class Association  *

The club was founded in 1937 by a group of sailboat owners who came together to race these classic wooden boats.  Since many boats had been built already, the original members felt it necessary to maintain the status of these Small Sloops as a one-design racing class, by insuring that all SS boats (or yachts purporting to be SS boats) would be built only from the official designs and moulds.  A class of this magnitude, increasing year by year, warranted organization and reasonable central control for the sole purpose of maintaining the original design and standards.

At the present time, over 150+ SS sailboats have been built, since the original design was constructed by Benjamin Hallock in 1908.  Of that number, less than half are still around, and only a few dozen are still launched for sailing and racing.  The purpose of this web site is to encourage the existing SS sailboat owners to collaborate with one another, and maintain their common interest through summer boat races, casual sailing, and other volunteer activities.
